On Saturday, February 18th, Wellspring Dance Academy is hosting a free showing in the Wellspring Theatre of the recently released documentary, Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance (uprootedfilm.com).
"Uprooted is a feature-length documentary celebrating African history, lineage, and future progressions of jazz dance. Featuring a stellar cast of leading industry experts, award-winning choreographers, and legendary performers, this groundbreaking documentary goes back to the roots in Africa and follows the evolution of this incredible dance form through every single decade and genre. Exploring and commenting on political and social influences, the film addresses topics such as appropriation, racism, socialism, and sexism."

We are hosting this screening to share stories of the voices that were lost in the codification of jazz dance and to find a clearer understanding and connection to one another. We are hoping to gather dancers and folx from all around Kalamazoo into our space for this special, intimate event.
